Question Evaluating the equation of a cell, not the value.

    Hello everyone!

This is my first time posting on Excel Forum. I am grading assignments on Excel and was wondering if there is anyway to evaluate the equation of a given cell rather than the cell value. For example, I would like to use the IF statement to see whether the student used the correct equation for every cell.

I hope this question makes sense!

There is not much point in attaching a picture of a worksheet - attach a sample Excel workbook instead.

Got it - perhaps you can explain more clearly what you want to achieve.

Re: Evaluating the equation of a cell, not the value.

    Pete,

In order to grade this lab assignment, I need to evaluate each cell. My thought was to use IF statements to evaluate each cell and give the student points depending if the cell value is correct.

However, if a student gets a cell value at the beginning of the assignment wrong, for example C10, other cell values that incorporate C10 in their equation will be wrong (F10). Only the first mistake will be marked wrong, C10. As long as F10 has the correct equation, points will not be deducted. I would kike to evaluate the equation of the cells rather than the cell value itself it determine the correct grade for the student.

I have been looking into different functions and I came across ISFORMULA and FORMULATEXT. Unfortunately, it is only available in Office 2013 and I have 2010.

I don't think you can do that using formulae in Excel.

There is a toggle (ctrl + ` )that will toggle between displaying the formulas and displaying the results of the formulas. If your goal is to look at a student's spreadsheet and see what formulas they are using, would that be enough? https://support.office.com/en-US/Art...rs=en-US&ad=US
