Averageif across multiple sheets returning #value

I've got this formula that is returning a #VALUE!:

=AVERAGEIF(first:last!A1,"*VS*",first:last!N14)

What I want it to do is, check cell A1 in the sheets between two sheets I've named first and last, I've made those two sheet names because I will adding more and more sheets in between the two. If it has the word VS (cell will only containt VS, or AT) then to average the numbers that the cell (in this case N14) has with the other sheets that meet the IF condition as well. Unfortunately I keep running into the #VALUE return. If any more info is needed, I can gladly explain, or post the sheet.

excel can't work this way
you need to collect data in question with indirect

We can probably do this for you, but it would be easier if you can upload a small (clean) sample workbook (not a pic) of what you are working with, and what your expected outcome would look like.
