Multiple Entries to find text within cell and return value from another table

Hi,

I have 100 entries of text which often differs by character or case. I am trying to somehow find the word in the text and use a formula somehow use a formula or macro, similar to a v lookup, which will return the corresponding number from a table. For example, as seen below, I would want to return pear from the text and then somehow return the number 3 from the table below it. I am unsure how to do this. Please help!

AN APPLE
apple 24586
fdi banana
pear ghr
(a) pear

Fruit Number
Apple 1
Banana 2
Pear 3

what denotes the fact you want pear? is it a user defined thing? ie someone types in the word pear into a cell or form? and if so, what are you wanting returning from the 1st table? just a "True" or "False" if its there or not?

Hi,

The data is random from a data base, in which I have to group together the fruit names. Therefore, for the example I am using Pear. This data that has been downloaded makes the data appear differently in each row. It differs by character and case. Ie (a) pear or PEAR.
I want to know if its there, but I also want to use some form of a formula like a v lookup which will return a corresponding value. Please see the table below as an example.

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook. The workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

To attach a file to your post,
click advanced (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage file",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
