Excel stuck when calculation, but responses when cell selected

    Hi all,

I am observing a strange thing with my excel.

I have a reasonably heavy workbook with formulas, where previous versions were taking 3-4 mins to calculate it.

My latest version is slightly more light, but still I am expecting it to take around the same amount of time to calculate.

Problem is, when I recalculate the progress, the progress indicator in the bottom right corner (%) seems to get stuck at certain values (around 70%) (which normally I would say is OK, given the number of calculations), however excel does not go into 'not responding' mode, instead, when the indicator gets stuck, if you select a cell, excel goes back to normal as if it has finished the calculations.

Hence to questions I have are:

    1) Why does it do that, and why if I leave my PC for another 10-15mins, the progress will still show 70%. Why excel does not update the progress bar if it has finished calculating?

    2) could it be that excel does not finish calculating and either interrupts calculating process itself or I interrupt it when select a cell when indication value seem to stuck.

If you have any ideas, thoughts, I would very much appreciate you sharing those!

    Many thanks!

    Excel version 2013

    Hi.

When you say that you "recalculate the progress", how exactly do you do that? Is this via a manual recalculation of the worksheet/workbook, e.g. pressing F9?

If so, I take it that you are aware that pressing any keys (or selecting a cell, as you mention) during this process will interrupt that recalculation and so effectively terminate it prematurely?

    Hi XOR,

Thanks for the reply. In the case above, I either press F9 or press 'calculate now' in the menu, or Ctrl + Alt + F9.

I was not aware pressing a key would stop the calculation, that must have been the issue, thank you!

Also a quick question on that one - would you know if when calculation / re-calculation is done via macro .calculate - in this case, pressing a button would not interrupt the calculation, would it?

    Cheers!

Re: Excel stuck when calculation, but responses when cell selected

I'm not sure re your question about calculation via a macro, to be honest.

The way I get round this (since I often need to work in other applications whilst a recalculation is taking place, and since I also regularly work in Manual Calculation mode) is to simply save the workbook. If you're in Automatic Calculation mode, this will trigger a recalculation; if you're in Manual Calculation mode, then providing that you have the Recalculate workbook before saving box checked, this will also force a recalculation.

What's more, whilst a file is being saved, unless you hit e.g. ESC, then you will find it difficult to interrupt the process and so can continue to work, e.g. in other applications.

Of course, this is all pretty secondary to the (I feel) main point, and that is: how have you managed to arrive at a situation in which your workbook is taking that long to calculate?!

I imagine that you cannot share the file, though I would strongly recommend that you look into ways in which you can greatly reduce that time. Anything more than a few seconds, in my opinion, is often the result of a poorly-designed workbook.

    Regards

Re: Excel stuck when calculation, but responses when cell selected

    Hi,

I have the exact same problem. I realize that nobody really got to the root of the issue, and I wanted to know if anybody has ever faced this problem as well.

I will give more details about the problem: excel simply does not finish a calculation. It gets stuck at 40% (in my case). The weirdest part is that this only happens once I use auto filter. Before using it, the calculations happen normally (takes about 20s to calculate). After using auto filter, it gets stuck at 40%. And if I clear the filers, it still gets stuck at 40%!!! What is more interesting is that once I delete all the formulas and paste them again, it is able to finish calculations once again. However, I can't use this "trick" because I need multiple people that don't understand much about excel using the file.

I am using a bunch of array formulas (ctrl shift enter for max if). However, as said, they don't make nor the the file nor the calculations too large.

If someone needs the file, I can try to upload it.

    Any suggestions?
