Index, Match, Large and Countif

Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to read this thread. I'm trying to create an Excel formula that will take the 2nd occurrence of a value(a duplicate) as the 2nd largest expense and so forth. What I have now is this...

=INDEX($B$6:$B$32,MATCH(LARGE($C$6:$C$32,2),$C$6:$C$32,0))

I think I need to put a countif statement in the formula somewhere to make it rank the 1st expense, 2nd, the 3rd,etc.

The problem with the formula as is...if I have $500 for a 401k expense and $500 for Rent. It will only pick one and not the other.

Hi, welcome to the forum

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook. The workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

To attach a file to your post,
click advanced (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage file",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Regards

Thanks for the tip. I have attached the file...the problem is highlighted in yellow on the first sheet, not blue.

I'm thinking I could use the Rank formula too.

I started with this in F2 and filled down:
Formula: copy to clipboard

Then applying an approach that micope21 taught me this array formula in E2 and filled down.
Formula: copy to clipboard

Array formulas are not committed in the regular way. You commit by pressing and holding Ctrl + Shift as you hit Enter.

File is attached. Does this do what you want?

Re: Index, Match, Large and Countif

Gosh, that is really beautiful. I created a work around that involved using a random number to break tie-breakers and categorize everything and create another index-match function. I'll need to step through that formula to really understand it.

Thanks for the help.
