Calculating the number of times a value appears based on Month and Year

I have attached a sample of what I'm trying to do and hope someone can help. I have one worksheet with a date and an ID value and another worksheet that contains a list of the same ID values that may repeat multiple times. I'm trying to get a count for the number of times the ID value repeats but only include IDs that fall within a specified month/year.

Thank you for your quick response, but I don't think this is working as expected. There are values on the second sheet that should be counted not the number of items per month. January should have 4 for a value because A1, B1, C1 appear 4 times on sheet 2.

I appreciate your help with this but I think we are looking at the results differently. Sheet1 contains an ID column and a Date. For each month in the date column we need to determine the number of times the ID on sheet one appears on Sheet2 based on the month so:

On Sheet1 if we look at January we have IDs of A1, B1 and C1. We would then look at Sheet2 for any rows that contain A1, B1 and C1. A1 appears twice, B1 appears once, and C1 appears once. This means that on Sheet1 under January we should have a value of 4. (2+1+1)
