    Conditional validation, cell that switches between drop down list and text input

    Hello, everyone.. I'm new here, so please don't mind if I do something wrong! haha

    Okay, i'm on excel 2010, and I will try to explain my issue.. I have a workbook that looks something like this:

    ..........ColumnA...............ColumnB
    Row1...Type of Data:........[dropdown]
    Row2...[Formula 1]..........[Formula 2]

    Formula 1 = if(dropdownchoice1;"Select an option on the dropdown:"; if(dropdownchoice2; "Type in your name"; ""))

    So, on "Formula 2" (B2), I want a formula that, if the user selects Choice 1 on the dropdown at B1, then B2 will be a dropdown with new choices for it to make... Now, if the user selects Choice 2 on the dropdown at B1, then B2 will be a normal cell, that the user has to type something in!

    Hope I made myself clear enough for someone to help me, because I feel kinda puzzled trying to understand what I just typed in! lol

    You would need an event macro to do this.

    I'm not much of a programmer so someone else will need to help you.

    You might want to contact a mod/admin and have this thread moved to the programming forum where you have a better chance of getting a solution.

    it sounds like that would require vba to do exactly what you're asking... but i feel like that's probably not necessary - dropdown lists can include a write-in option if you go to the Error Alert tab in the data validation prompt and uncheck "Show error alert after invalid data is entered".

    If you do not like that solution please upload a desensitized sample of your workbook so we can write the vba specifically for it.

    Okay, guys! Thanks a lot! If there's no built-in formula for it, then I shall work my way around it! I've done some stuff with VBA before, shouldn't be much of a trouble! I was just trying to avoid it, anyway...
