I would make a pivot table then do a lookup off that pivot. It is not very pretty, but it would automatically sort the dates, so you just create the report off the pivot.

You can also copy all of the items from column A into column D then go to data and remove duplicates. Now you have a list of unique machine numbers. The formula in E will then search for the earliest date.
As long as machine#s stay grouped this is like nigelbloomy's approach only with non-array formula.
