    Printing formulas

I need to print formulas. I show the formulas and they look OK as in the figure below.

    formulas 1.png

When I go to print them, the filename is attached to the table reference which doesn't fit into the cell. As in this image.

    formulas 3.png

Is there an option to prevent inserting the filename when printing?

    Re: Printing formulas

If you're using Excel 2013 it has a new function called FORMULATEXT.

It does just what its name implies, it returns a formula as a TEXT sting.

If cell A1 contains a formula enter this formula in say, B1:

    =FORMULATEXT(A1)

    Would that work for you?

    Re: Printing formulas

    Not exactly.

This is for a regulated environment and the formulas in the cell need to be reviewed and verified. This is typically done by printing the workbook then displaying the formulas and re-printing the workbook.

Adding another formula (formulatext) would add another formula to be checked along with the original formula.

that's very interesting but when reviewing that requires me to flip back and forth between 2 worksheets.

    Re: Printing formulas

Another option do a find and replace
    Find =
    replace with '=
that converts all your formulas to text and they will not alter to show the workbook after that.

    Re: Printing formulas

I tried AutoFit, WrapText, and ShrinkToFit on columns, rows, and a range which included the cells in question. No joy.

    Re: Printing formulas

My technique of find and replace and then wrap text didnt work?

I also work in a regulated environment. I use all of these techniques including the FORMULATEXT function and the VBA. You're not testing to see if Excel Functions do what they say they do, just that the way you have it set up works the way you expect it to (subtle difference). The FORMULATEXT function or even the macro are tools that do not need to be validated in and of themselves.

    Re: Printing formulas

I'm working with protected worksheets so manually replacing data is not viable.
I'm also stuck with 2010 so FORMULATEXT isn't available.

I agree with the validation statements. We're verifying that the correct equations are being used and referring to the correct cells. Everything looks fine until I try to print, then the file name is inserted into the formulas as Excel makes the references fully qualified.

    Re: Printing formulas

If you cannot work with an unprotected workbook during validation (for our validations, we are given two copies of the workbook, one protected and one unprotected so that we can do things like trace dependents and precedents, etc.), the last suggestion would be to do screenshots and paste them landscape into Word. Then you can print the Word doc.

thanks, I'm trying to get agreement for reviewing formulas on screen. Getting some kickback from mentally ossified users but still chipping away.
