    Calculating a Current Average ignoring cells with no data yet.

    Hi,
    I am working a sheet to average students weekly marks but would like to be able to give them their current mark and have excel ignore the assignment cells that don't have marks yet. This is what I have so far. I think it's an IF statement but not sure how to work it out completely.

    Here's the formula I have so far.

    =AVERAGE(D4,L4,T4,AB4,AJ4,AR4,AZ4,BH4,BP4,BX4,CF4,CN4,CV4,DD4,DL4,DT4,EB4,EJ4)

    Thanks for any help. Gradebook.xlsx

    If you didnt have zero's in the unused items then the Average calc above would work fine as it is. Do you really want to denote a not yet completed week with zero? what happens if a student actually scores 0?

    The cells are set up to do the auto-calculation. I am trying to set this up for teachers who are not excel savvy so if I can get them to enter their marks in the weekly stuff, hopefully Excel will do all the work on the number crunching. That way the students can always get their current average in real time. In theory, anyway.

    Perhaps =SUMPRODUCT(--(MOD(COLUMN(D4:EJ4)+4;8)=0)*(D4:EJ4>0)*D4:EJ4)/SUMPRODUCT(--(MOD(COLUMN(D4:EJ4)+4;8)=0)*(D4:EJ4>0))

    The point is though, that if you code it to ignore zero (on the assumption its a week thats not yet valid) then you have the potential for incorrect averages. eg

    Student score 100% in week 1, weeks 2 and 3 they dont bother turning up for school and therefore score zero for those weeks, if you ignore zeros then this student will average at 100% whereas the correct score is actually 33.33%
