Automatically save data locally (not referencing a server) when closing the file

    Hello-

A partner emails me a workbook (comprising of several worksheets) every day but they populated one worksheet with data from a server location at their company location (no idea why.)

When I open the file at my company the data (numbers) is missing since on this one worksheet since I do not have (or want) access to their server location.

Is there some magical way when they save their file it simply saves their data in the worksheet rather than reference the server location? I’d like to be able to instruct my partner on how this can be done.

    Best regards-

    j

The usual problem is cell formulas that link to other workbooks.
...Uh Oh....I feel a rant coming....
The solution is to NEVER create a linked formula...They are disasters waiting to happen. I haven't built a linked workbook in many years. There are always alternatives to linked workbooks and they always outweigh the perceived benefits of linking. Linking is lazy and usually reflects an unwillingness of the Excel user to learn proper workbook construction. Recipients of linked workbooks are at the mercy of the sender and are often powerless to correct the problem unilaterally
(There...I feel better for having said that)

Another possibility would be queries that automatically refresh when a workbook is opened. I think you can set queries to only refresh on demand.

    Regarding the immediate issue:
You could ask the partner to create a new workbook and Copy/Paste_Special.Values/Paste_Special.Formats, and send you the new workbook.

Had a hunch would hear something like that. Maybe I’ll just ask them to not reference the server.

    Always a pleasure Ron-

Hi there, but don't You get a pop up window asking whether to continue or check the links and that the source cannot be found? I assume You disregard it (choose continue) and You get displayed all the numbers visual (with underlying links). To get rid of the links, which You can do Yourself or You can ask the liaison person, and to supplement advice from Ron to perform drop (all) the links, ie. for (excel 2007) from Data menu> Connections tab> Edit links. There One can break the link for all the links in the workbook. On the other hand I am quite sure the person has good reason to reference the server for data.

    Regards

I was able to get the partner to cease linking the 'foreign' server - thanks all.
