formula to change cell colors

I am creating a training spreadsheet that records training dates and the expiration dates. Is there a way to make a cell (the expiration date cell) turn yellow when it is within 6 months of expiring and red when it is within 1 month of expiring?

Yes, you would use conditional formatting. You need two rules, one for yellow and one for red. An example is attached.
