    Cannot delete custom format

I created a custom format, but I can't delete it, and excel crashes every time I attempt to delete it. I've already tried reinstalling. Anyone have any ideas? Having an extra unused format isn't an issue, but the format takes over all other date formats.

    Welcome to the board.

Just one workbook has the problem? If so, post it, stripping the data if necessary.

    No it's every worksheet.

    Re: Cannot delete custom format

You mean every workbook, or every worksheet in one workbook?

Custom formats belong to workbooks, not the application. What if you open a new blank workbook (i.e., not from a template -- File > New > Blank Workbook)?

Correct. The format itself is saved to the program itself, therefore every workbook is having the same issue.

No, not correct -- again, custom formats stay with the workbook, not the application.

    What about this?

What if you open a new blank workbook (i.e., not from a template -- File > New > Blank Workbook)?

    Re: Cannot delete custom format

No? If formats are saved to just one workbook, I wouldn't have the problem in any other workbook. Custom formats (such as a date format, like this case) that are added remain with the application, which is why I can use a format I created in one workbook in another.
I am asking if there is a different issue with excel itself and if anyone else has had this issue or had it resolved, because I cannot delete a custom format, and every time I attempt to, excel crashes.

Maybe with Office 365 -- not with any other version of Office for the last 20 years through at least 2010. And if it's unique to Office 365, I can't help.

    Can you post a workbook?

    Re: Cannot delete custom format

    Hi,

As shg has already mentioned, custom number formats and cell styles are workbook specific and not stored at application level. The same is true of all desktop versions of Excel up to and including 2016. Since you cannot to date create custom number formats in Excel online, I presume you are referring to the desktop version.

Did you add the custom format to a template workbook or to a normal workbook? Also did you add it as part of a cell style or merely by applying a number format to a cell?

    Re: Cannot delete custom format

No, the first time I used it was in a blank workbook.
I created a format "yyyy/mm/dd hh" (which I did not mean to create). I have tried to delete the format from several different workbooks, including new ones (not from a template. The format is available on every single worksheet, which is why I said the application saved it and not the worksheet). When I type a date in, it does not recognize it as any other format except that, and I can't set it to a different one. Every time I try to delete the format, excel stops working.
This only happened after I added a new computer to my network, and logged into windows 10 with the same credentials. The date/time on the new computer was set differently. However, the new computer does not have office 365 installed.

    Re: Cannot delete custom format

Custom formats are workbook specific and deleting them should not be a problem so there is certainly another issue here. Additionally, they are not the default format unless you modified the Normal cell style to use the custom format. Even were that the case, changing the format should not cause problems.

So let us begin troubleshooting with three questions:

    1. Are you using 365 on a Mac or a PC?

    2. If you run Excel in safe mode, is the custom format still there? You can do this either by typing excel.exe /s into the Run box in Windows, or by pressing and holding the Ctrl key whilst starting Excel.

    3. How did you create the format?

    Re: Cannot delete custom format

    1) PC
    2) Just tried safe mode, the format is still there, and I was unable to delete it
    3) under cell formatting>custom format, where I used the text box to add the format "yyyy/mm/dd hh"

Yes, the problem appears to only affect that specific one.

    Re: Cannot delete custom format

I have only just seen the additional information added to your post #11. It is possible that your profile has an issue.

If you log in as a different user on the machine with 365, is the problem still apparent?

What are the regional settings on the 365 machine with your profile logged in? If you change them to another region, does it affect the Excel issue at all?
