    Basic issue about percentages (novice)

I'm trying to do something fairly basic but I'm new to excel and am hitting a problem.

Below are a couple of images to explain what's happening, the bottom is just the same situation but with the formulas showing.

I am taking a total A (row 130) then subtracting a number from elsewhere (row 132) to get a new total B (row 133)

I want to then calculate 28.6% of this new total B for my final, everything works fine until I multiply total B by 0.286 (row 135) after that my final total is always 0.286 no matter what numbers sit in the previous boxes.

I've tested the multiply function elsewhere by multiplying a running total by 0.286 and it comes out fine but I then subtracted a number from the running total first then multiplied that answer by 0.286 and got the same problem as here so it's not an issue with this cell it's a problem with this list of commands. Is there a limit on how many times you can feed the answer of a function into another function before hitting problems or am I just doing something stupid here?

Hope I've explained clearly, if not feel free to ask anything.

Is there a reason you are using the IMSUB() function? I don't see any evidence that you are using complex or imaginary numbers, nor would I expect you to.

What happens when you use the IMxxx functions is that the result of the IMxxx() functions -- because they are expected to be complex numbers -- are text. As with the SUM() and similar functions, Excel ignores text (even numbers stored as text) in the PRODUCT() function. https://support.office.com/en-us/art...c-80982a0512ce

Unless I am wrong and you really are working with complex numbers, I would replace the IMSUB() function with a subtraction operator "-" in row 133: =G130-G132.

On the off chance that you are working with complex numbers, you probably need to replace the PRODUCT() function with the IMPRODUCT() function.

Perfect! that worked just fine, thank you very much

I really only used that function because I typed 'subtract' into the function description box and it gave me that result.

Out of curiosity, to put a simple function into a cell, do I just type it in? at the minute I'm using the autosum button then re-writing the contents but that feels wrong to me.

Yes, you can type your function into the cell -- whether simple or complex. In the example above, simply type =G130-G132 into a cell.
