What does the [ ] do? I know it sort of evaluates but it doesn't seem to do any difference her.

Right. I recall now that the [] can be used to evaluate worksheetfunctions. I did some research and it does not exist as a worksheetfunction in VBA. If you search for Now in the object browswer it pops up but it's a true VBA function. Now we know.
