    Very odd!!

Hi all, wonder if you can help me (again!).

I am comfortable with using simple formulas, using the Alt = keys to enter a formula as =SUM

I don't know how, but when I try to use that formula (ie =SUM) and enter a cell (eg D4), I am suddenly getting a drop down menu that only seems to allow certain functions to be used instead of simply using the cell reference. I'm not sure how I can explain it so have (I hope!) attached a jpg that attempts to show what is happening!

Thanks in advance of any help. I really appreciate it.

    Mike

Standard Excel , using "predictive" logic i.e are you going to enter SUM, SUMIF, SUMIFs, SUMPRODUCT .....

    Re: Very odd!!

you typed d inside the brackets of the sum formula.

Excel thinks you want to insert a function starting with d and is listing the options.

highlight the d and drag across a range of cells to select them, or finish typing the cell range eg D1:Z1.

Hi John, thanks for taking the time to reply. I agree - but have never had this before! It's suddenly started - previously, I've happily set up a =SUM function and manually entered the calculations I want it do by typing the cell references. Have I perhaps inadvertently enabled predictive logic and, if so, is it possible to disable it??

    Re: Very odd!!

HI Thanks for the reply. Yes, that works but it isn't always practical. For example, I may want to add D3 and H99 together.....Plus, this is something that has suddenly started. In another reply to this thread, it was suggested that predictive logic is being used - if so, how do I stop that happening?

Have a look at File==>Options==>Formulas==>Auto Complete (in Excel 2010) .. not sure if it the same in 2003 version.

    Re: Very odd!!

I think you've cracked it! I'm using Excel 2007. Only option I can see is from Office Button - Excel Options - Formulas...I've unticked the "Formula Auto Complete" box and it seems OK on the spreadsheet I'm running. I'll try a couple of others.....

    Re: Very odd!!

    That's understendable.
But please rename this be to something closer to your issue like:

Problem using the Alt keys to enter a formula
