How to find the next higher value??

    Hi,

I have a formula that under the correct circumstances generates a "Buy" signal but otherwise leave the cell blank. Let us assume that this signal is located in cell M1. When I get this signal I need a formula in N2:N6 that compares the value in H1 with the following values in H2:H6. I want the formula to return a "Sell" signal when/if Excel find the first bigger value than H1. If no value is higher than H1 I still want Y6 to signal "Sell".

If for example H3 gives me a "Sell" signal, then H4:H6 must not generate any signal but be blank.

In column M I may find several randomly occasions with a "Buy" signal so I need to be able to copy the formula downwards but to be applied on the separate "Buy" signals.

I am not able to use Match + index since the values must be sorted in date (column B) chronological order.

Is the above even possible and if so, can someone help me?

    Thanks in advance!
    Jonas

    Welcome to the forum!

Will you please attach a sample Excel workbook? We are not able to work with or manipulate a description of one.

    1. Make sure that your sample data are REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential data is removed or replaced with dummy data first (e.g. names, addresses, E-mails, etc.).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells as they cause lots of problems.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Please pay particular attention to point 2 (above): without an idea of your intended outcomes, it is often very difficult to offer appropriate advice.
