    IF, AND, OR function in one

    So this is the question and the answer is B, which is Yes when a1 is 1 and B1 is 0, I under stand why this is however, I feel like I would not understand if under different conditions, I Would appreciate any kind of clarification. Furthermore, I dont really understand if it is saying that whenever A1 is 1 and B1 is 0, is the only condition in which it would be 0. Therefore, in this case 1=true and 0=false. But if A1 and B1 are both 1, then the answer could still be YEs. I would appreciate if some one could completely clarify the formula they have listed, and explain what it is trying to say and what the answer is trying to say, because I am quite adept with the functions, however, i think im confusing my self and its not making too much sense.

    1. This means if a1 = True or b1 = True then True

    2. This means if Answer 1 and A1 = True then Y otherwise N

    So A1 must be True to give a Y b1 is irrelevent because if a = false then equation 2 will always return "N"

    A1 = 0 B1 = 0 = N
    A1 = 0 B1 = 1 =N
    A1 = 1 B1 = 1 = Y
    A1 =1 B1 = 0 = Y

    So your answer is B

    Nothing is more frustrating than to be working on homework and to get stuck. Without guidance, you might have no hope of finishing the assignment before the deadline. The Internet can be a big help in that respect, but without learning how to get the right answer, asking others to solve your homework questions for you simply becomes a downward spiral (and it's cheating).

    We do not want to contribute to you cheating yourself out of your education, but we also acknowledge that seeking assistance to learn a concept is a legitimate request.

    If you are genuinely interested in receiving help in the form of tutoring or coaching, then please rephrase the title of your original post to clearly indicate you are seeking coaching or tutoring help. Any forum members (who are willing to assist as a tutor) will modify their responses accordingly to facilitate your learning. Tutors don't tell you the answers, they help you figure it out for yourself; so don't expect answers, expect suggestions, or just plain hints. Also, be specific in describing the function/formula or technique you trying to learn, and tell us what you have attempted so far. Otherwise, expect your plea for homework answers to be ignored.

    Hello There, pete as much as I appreciate your help, this is not homework nor anything of the sort, I had trouble understanding the questions therefore wanted more clarification, I don't understand your hostility regarding this matter, it is misplaced. But I do appreciate everyones help.

    Sorry what? this is forums for excel help, you are not helping me cheat nor doing my homework, or anything that you have written above. I needed some clarification for one question and I needed help. I don't understand all the inputs nor are they needed. People can choose to reply to a thread or not. I did not ask for people's advice or remarks or critiques. But I did appreciate everyone's help, if you do not want to reply to a thread then please don't, you are not obligated to do so.

    I didn't intend to be hostile - you can see from Ford's response that the Forum has a policy about Homework, and this thread (and your earlier one which I helped you with) seemed to be very much akin to an assignment that a teacher might have set for you to complete.

    Re: IF, AND, OR function in one

    well , please don't assume things, because I am not in the grade level to be given homework for me to complete. And as far as I am concerned I don't think this forum is based upon people trying to judge or infer the posters intentions or why he posted the things he did. This is why it is a "Public" forum, it is not needed for people to dive into anything more than the question at hand in which they have the choice to answer it not, therefore everything else is irrelevant. Nonetheless, thank you for your help.

    thank you for this, can you tell me how you got the above truth table, becasue when you deal with OR I know that the rule is that if both inputs are 0 then the output is 0 otherwise it is 1. For AND it is if both inputs are 1 then the output is 1 otherwise it is 0. MY question is for ANswer 1, or the OR function it also shows that when B1 is 1 with A1 it can be true, so why is that it that the answer is Y when A1 is 1 and B1 is 0 and why is there 2 A1's in the formula. thank you

    Re: IF, AND, OR function in one

    There are two A1s in the original formula.

    Formula: copy to clipboard

    Looking at the or statement if A1 = 1 or B1 =1 or both A1 and B1 are 1 then 1 that is fairly simple.

    The And part of the formula is:

    Formula: copy to clipboard
    Please Login or Register to view this content.

    If X is 1 and A1 is 1 then "Y" otherwise "N". Notice A1 must be 1

    So if A1 = 0 then "N"

    If A1 =1 then your Or Statement returns 1 even if B1 is 0

    If A1 =0 and B1 = 0 your Or Statement returns 0, but that is irrelevent because A1 = 0 and the And Statement returns "N"
    If A1 =0 and B1 = 1 your Or Statement returns 1, but that is irrelevent because A1 = 0 and the And Statement returns "N"
    If A1 =1 and B1 = 0 your Or Statement returns 1, and A1 = 1 so the And Statement returns "Y"
    If A1 =1 and B1 = 1 your Or Statement returns 1, and A1 = 1 so the And Statement returns "Y"

    Re: IF, AND, OR function in one

    Given that hameseyed started with this: "So this is the question and the answer is B," I don't get why others on here were clamoring about "doing homework".

    To hameseyed,
    If this were a timed testing situation, one quick way to narrow down the choices is to notice that the IF formula only allows for results "Y" or "N" (and errors such as #VALUE!, of course).
    So, choice B would be the only plausible answer anyway.
