Drop-down list based on the given file: how to create such helpful and neat list?

    Hello!

I have a file from this website https://www.vertex42.com
and there are few very interesting functions and formulas.

The first question is about the beautifully constructed drop-down list, and I can't decipher how they did that.
I am attaching a modified (much shortened version) for convenience. On the tab Transactions there are these lists in columns A and G.
A's list depends on categories listed in tab Accounts, and G's list depends on categories listed in tab Categories.

If you put a mouse on any cell, say A5, or G7, you will see up and down arrows at the right edge of the cell, and clicking on these arrows you can choose a desired category.

How is it created? It looks really neat, let alone very helpful. I will be grateful for your help on how to create exactly the same list.

    Thank you very much!

Standard Data Validation lists defined on the 'Data' tab. The only 'complication' is they use Named Ranges for the lists on the 'Categories' and 'Accounts' sheets and Conditional Formatting (Home Tab) to highlight the cell.

Thank you so much! It is so great to learn this!
Could you, please, advise if it's possible to use such list in the same way I can use a combo box, or a scroll bar, which change the value of a certain cell counting the picked item's order?

I attach the same file but with the added example (it's a tiny one). Using Format cell option of the Combo box I set the value of C30 (tab Transactions).

Not really sure what you mean but it is certainly possible to use a range as the source for a ComboBox and update a cell when an item is selected. I've never used a Scroll bar for this but I do know you can link a cell that is updated when the scroll bar is scrolled.

EDIT: Oh! I have just noticed that I actually didn't attach the file with the example.

Yes, that's the point. I use both ComboBox and Scroll bar as an example of what I want to achieve by using the drop down lists i have now learned (the one from Data Validation). As I showed in the example (in the file attached), I can achieve the desired effect - get the item's number on the list - by using both ComboBox and Scroll bar. But how to do the same using the Data Validation drop down list?
