Post Comparison Formula

Hello, everyone. I'm an avid user of Excel, and I use it to practice basketball analytics extensively. I have amassed a database of a ton of basketball players within the NBA, and I have a bunch of different metrics and combine information for most of my players. I thought of a new idea to create some sort of formula or use some sort of function within Excel to take the metrics and combine info of a player, look into my entire database, and put the name of another player to compare it to that other player that the Excel database sees as most similar to that player. Basically a sort of "best comparable player" type of function, if that makes any sense. I know this is possible within Excel, because of all the things Excel can do, it's hard for me to believe such a function isn't possible. After a week or two of tweaking around in Excel and looking up endlessly online and trying to figure out how to do this, I've resorted to asking the community to help me out here. Is there any way I could get Excel to look at all the players in my database and compare one specific player to another without having to deal with two separate Excel sheets for this like 99% of Google is telling me to? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me. If any of you have seen this post, I posted it on another forum like this one. Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    and ...

Attach a sample workbook (not image).

Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate.

Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and then scroll down to Manage Attachments to open the upload window.

Agree that seeing a sample of what you have/want would help, but maybe a Pivot Table may help, using scores as the extract?
    1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

    Re: Comparison Formula

Sorry, I’m new to this website, and I didn’t know you couldn’t duplicate posts. Anyways, are you saying I should include a sample of my database to show everyone what I’m talking about when I’m saying I need a “Best comparison” formula? I’m just saying, I believe it’s possible, and I’m hoping you guys can help me out here. Any suggestions?

    Re: Comparison Formula

    Best suggestion:

Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? Please don't attach a picture of one (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.
