Requesting help with filtering data in linked sheets?

    Hi all,

I've made some statistical sheets that gives me results for various variables for the entire sample of data I'm looking at. Now, to make things more interesting, I would like to view the same statistics/distribution for variable 1 dependent on some condition in variable 2 (if it's positive or negative for example). I've typically set up my sheets with data sheets that I update manually and then my statistical sheets update automatically using that as input data.

Please see sheet "1" in the attached workbook. This shows the distribution and associated statistics for ALL days in the sample for variable 1. This data is pulled from sheet "Data".

So, the ideal for me then would be if I could filter the variable "Open" in column D in "Data" as positive and then have sheet "1" update with all associated values for variable 1 when Open is positive.

Sadly, this does not seem to happen when trying.

Is there some smart way to do this?

The little more cumbersome process is to create some new sheets that I can use to 'ask questions' by simply copy and pasting from sheet "Data" after I've sorted the data. This isn't too cumbersome, but if I could simply filter directly using the sheets I already made, that would be easier and reduce my amount of sheets.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hi Elijah,

I like to work with the raw data first and see if I can get your results without needing separate sheets. See where I've done a Pivot Table and Chart on your Raw Data and then tried to put Var1 and Var2 on the same column and did another Pivot chart (Sheet1). See if what I've done can help with your question/problem.

    Hi, MarvinP,

    Thank you!

I'm just back inside and headed back out again, so I don't really have time for an in depth look.

I basically have zero experience with Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts, so what you did wasn't immediately intuitive for me. Also, bear in mind that I would like to have the statistics I compiled in sheet 1 and 2 also. Like averages, max/mins, etc.

I will take a better look tomorrow or later tonight and sit down with it.

PS: I guess I should perhaps learn Pivot Tables/Charts if I'm interested in data exploration and 'asking questions' from my data?

    Best,

    Elijah

    Hi Elijah,

    Thanks for the rep.
Look at these two links for getting used to Pivot Table Statistics.

Re: Requesting help with filtering data in linked sheets?

    Hi, MarvinP,

I appreciate the resources for me to study.

At the time being, I'm very busy with other stuff, so I will probably go with the 'manual method' of filtering data in my source sheet and and copy and paste that into my other sheets. For now...

But I'm sure Pivot Tables/Charts can improve my data exploration skills, so I will put it on my already crowded to-do list.

    Thanks again.

    Elijah
