I am struggling to make a scale using SmartArt lines.
What I would like to do is to draw an horizontal line and then copy this and paste it 9deg rotated and continue this till with 20 lines I have covered 180deg. Is this possible?

Good afternoon j_southern
Are you using SmarArt or the standard Insert > Shapes functionality. I don't think you can do it using the former, but you could using the latter though it's a but fiddly.
- For 9 degrees of separation covering 180 degrees you will need 20 lines.
- Create one line and copy it 19 times.
- Right click on one line, and select Format Shape.
- under the "Effects" box - the middle one, select the 3-D Rotation option.
- Under the Z Rotation preset, set this to 9 degrees and move your line into place.
- Do the same for all other lines, increasing the preset by 9 degrees at a time.

DominicB,
Many thanks for your response. I was using the smartart option in much the way you suggest. You are very right in saying its a bit fiddly! I was hoping I could say set out one 45deg section and group it and then copy and rotate this3 times. I could but because the copy does not appear exactly over the original it is impractical. I will just have to be patient.
