Using a function to look at another column to pull from

I have column called "Old Type" [free text -- no validation]). I wanted to add data validation to the column, so I created a new column called it "New Type" with data validation.

Is it possible to do a VLOOKUP on the old column, try to get a close match and select a choice from the drop-down based on that match?

OR should I have just put data validation on the old column and skipped making a new column?

Any direction would be greatly appreciated - thank you!

I forgot to add that the column "Old Type" is filled with data that I need to normalize to fit this new validation.
