Duplicate values found, but the wrong cells are always highlighted

Using Conditional Formatting in Excel 2016, can someone tell me why this simple formula for finding duplicates for each row is not working properly? It finds the duplicates, but then for some bizarre reason, it highlights the cells that are two rows down and one column to the left. It does this for every duplicate that is found.

    =COUNTIF($B4:$AX4,B4)>1

Shouldn't this only highlight the duplicates that are actually found? Why is it always highlighting the cells that are two rows down and one column to the left of the actual duplicate values? It's driving me bonkers!

You may have had the wrong cell active when you added the CF.

What range does the "refers to" box show?

    Thanks for the quick reply!
That was it!! I didn't even think about the range field, I was just focused on the formula.
