Imported data dates recognised as numbers

I’m looking to datedif between 2 dates to get the months difference ie =datedif(a1,b1,”m”) but it seems that it doesn’t work with imported data from a report. When I look into the formula it showing cells as numbers and won’t recognise it as a date. I’ve tried everything I know to solve this. Formatting, copy/paste etc and nothing seems to work. If anyone could help it will be much appreciated. It doesn’t even have to be a datedif formula that’s just the one I know.

You need to share the data and, ideally, the workbook. Sounds like text data that "looks like" dates. If you change the format of the cell to General, it will display as a (typically) five digit number. If the display doesn’t change, then it's text.

Use Data | Text to Columns to convert to true dates.
