Average of time between dates

Hi there,

I was wondering if you can please help with an ongoing formula. Here's some example data:

Date submitted Status
01/02/2018 Open
02/03/2018 Closed
06/07/2018 Closed
28/09/2018 Open


I need to calculate the average age of the request in the Date Submitted column for OPEN or CLOSED requests only. there are a lot of empty cells underneath and i need it to be an ongoing formula, however, every time i try, i get an average date value and not the average number between dates. I have tried using AVERAGEIF and even inserting a new column calculating the days..

re you looking for the average number of days between each date
I would use a helper column to get the number of days - and then average
Assuming column A and B
then in C
Date submitted Status
01/02/2018 Open
02/03/2018 Closed = A2-A1 and copy down - then average
06/07/2018 Closed
28/09/2018 Open

average would be 80 days for your sample
is that correct , if not
