    Linear equations

    Hi!
I searched the web and the forum for help but I couldn't fin the answer I was looking for.

I want to solve a linear equation in excel like the following. Solve for x: 10+5x=10+5+2x. Or even better if I could use cells directly like D5+E5*X=F5+F6+F7*X. Anyone got an idea?

    Thanks
    /Alvin

    Re: Linear equations

you can solve using the add in called solver, but for the example it would be more effort setting it up than solving mathematically

    subtracting 10 +2x from each side 3x=5 so x equals 5/3

it you were setting it up to use on more than one occasion, you would need the equations to always be written in the same order, otherwise setup would be a lot longer

    Re: Linear equations

    Thank you for your reply!
Yes, I know how to do it manually but I have a lot of equations set up that needs solving and I need to be able to see the changes live.

I have looked at the solver add in but I do not understand how to use it.

    Re: Linear equations

For an equation of first degree I'm not sure it's worth the hassle of setting up solver when it's so easy to do the manual calculation, still this is one way of setting up solver.

There is no need to use an objective cell as the two constraints decides the X value. And the X value found by solver is of course equal to 5/3.

    Re: Linear equations

Solver method was to complex, so I made an easier model with more cell references and specified linear engine for solver.

    Re: Linear equations

Yes, I did about the same based on your first example. I used your example to understad what I needed to do and adapted it to my sheet, then made a macro that solves all the rows at once with the click of a button. Thanks again
