The formula is working correctly, but it is incorrect for your requirements. You need this:
=IF(AI3=TRUE,"YES","NO")
The result in AI3 is TRUE/FALSE, not text.

Or you could just do this:
=IF(AI3,"YES","NO")

So sorry for the delayed reply. Yes that works and sorry for such a basic question that i overlooked!
As a follow up to this, is there a way of testing a range of cells rather than test the one. The range would be AI1:AI12
