Convert time to minutes

I wish to convert time (hh:mm) to minutes. E.g. 06:36 = 396 minutes. It is probably something quite simple but it is eluding me at the moment.

If the time is in A1 then minutes is given by

=A1*24*60

The time is stored as a number of days so to get minutes, multiply by the number of minutes in a day. You could also use

=A1*1440

but I can never remember than number so I let Excel figure it out for me

That doesn't work. The problem is converting from hh:mm format to number format.
If I use (A1*1440)-(A2*1440) I get 00:00 where A1 is greater than A2. I get the same result of 00:00 for any hh:mm value.

when you convert to decimal then you cannot use timeformatting of that cell anymore. you need to change your celformatting to General of number
