How to check a list for a value and then sum all amounts where value is the same

    Hi all,

I'm trying to sort my finances out and as a result I'm categorising my spend on my credit card.

As a result I have a very long list of items with a description (A) Category (B) and value (C)

I want to be able to total the items in the list from a certain category

    For example
    Tesco - Petrol - 50
    Tesco - Food - 30
    Tesco - Petrol - 60
    Tesco - Food - 50
    Tesco - Petrol - 40
    Tesco - Food - 60

    Total Food = 140
    Total Petrol - 150

What forumlar would work to review everything in a list of 300+ lines to check and sum all of these

Thanks in advance for the help

The formula you're looking for is SUMIF:

    Great. that worked a charm.
Now exploring that further is it possible to search Date range (D) as well?
So for example check date and if it's in the month of April or range say 1st April to 31st April to do the same?

    That would be SUMIFS(): https://support.office.com/en-us/art...6-611cebce642b

Or, this starts to feel like a pivot table would be a useful (maybe better) way to summarize the data: http://www.excel-easy.com/data-analy...ot-tables.html
