Is it possible to write a formula outside a range to affect a cell inside the range?

Certain cells in columns E and F will contain a letter (x) as a selector of a winner or those two players that are tied in a competition. Column F is designated for player results that end in a tie where both players are awarded points equally, using the "x" for both players. The column data in these is deleted after the competition is closed with a macro, which would erase the formula as well if entered in the F column, so to enter a formula in column F is less than ideal. I would like to enter a formula in a cell outside the range of columns E and F, say for instance column W, that will affect a cell or cells in column F.
In further explanation, if I enter an "x" in cell F6 denoting that the player is tied, I would also like to have the formula automatically place the "x" in the cell F7 to give both players equal point totals. It would be easy, most would say, to just enter an "x" in both F6 and F7 to gain the desired results, and that is likely what I will have to do; however, I would like to know if it is possible to achieve the desired results with a formula. I started by placing an "x" in cell F6, then entered +F6 in cell W6 to copy the "x" to that cell. Can a formula be written in cell W7 to then copy the "x" to cell F7 from cell W6?

The short answer to your question is "no" - you cannot create a formula in one cell that will produce a result in another cell.

However, there may be a way to achieve some measure of automation.

Will you please attach a sample Excel workbook? We are not able to work with or manipulate a picture of one and nobody wants to have to recreate your data from scratch.

    1. Make sure that your sample data are REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired results are also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential data is removed or replaced with dummy data first (e.g. names, addresses, E-mails, etc.).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells as they cause lots of problems.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Please pay particular attention to point 2 (above): without an idea of your intended outcomes, it is often very difficult to offer appropriate advice.

Why not just add a line to the macro to copy and paste the x's as needed before deleting them?

Thank you so much for your prompt response. I am inclined to think that I would be better served to just enter an "x" manually in the two cells to get desired results since any formulas to automate the process would be wiped out when the cell contents were deleted post-competition. I will scratch my head on other, more important, issues. I may fool around with creating a formula in another section of the worksheet that will not be affected by the cell content deletion macro, and then add a copy/paste at the end of said macro to reset the formula for the next event. BTW, I love this forum. It has been a godsend in improving my limited abilities in Excel. Thank you all.
