Dynamic dropdown help - Indirect/Substitute function

    Hi all

I'm having an issue when using dynamic dropdowns.

I recently had my workbook working as intended, with the dropdowns referencing lists on a different, hidden workbook. The list being referenced was "investment sector" and this would populate the list of sectors I wished to use. There was then a dependent dropdown (cell B108) which would use this function =INDIRECT(SUBSTITUTE(C108," ","")) to return another list of fund names within that sector (with C108 being the cell with the sector name in).

I recently decided not to use an additional workbook to reference, and use queries so that all the referencing happened from within my workbook itself.

The workbook I use needs to be copied over to a new workbook and historically this has left the functions intact. I have encountered an issue now though: one of my sectors will not produce the dependent dropdown for fund name in B108 however the rest remain working.

I can see no issues with the formula which provides these fund names, they're in an array as they should be, there are no superfluous spaces where there shouldn't be so I am at a loss.

Does anyone know of any other things to check why this won't be working? I'm very confused as the rest functions as it should!

    Thanks in advance

Re: Dynamic dropdown help - Indirect/Substitute function

Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? However, please give us an indication of the approximate number of rows of data you want the solution to work with (100, 1000, 100,000 or whatever). Please don't attach a picture of an Excel sheet (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. It does NOT have to be your real sheet - mock up a SAMPLE if you need to. But not 1000's of rows!!! It makes manual checking so tedious. Whatever you do... make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    2. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    3. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.
