Hyperion Hierarchy - selecting next non-blank cell up in the column to the left

I'm working on a template that leverages the companies structure. We use Hyperion and it can spit out the hierarchy in Excel the way the system is organized. The issue is that it's set up having the parent in a row then its child in a row beneath it and in a column to the right. My template needs to have this data line up next to each other and not staggered. I want this template to have the capability to plop in future hierarchies in one area then my table to update automatically without having to go through the process of selecting blank cells = first non-blank cell above then manually deleting and spot checking to make sure different areas align appropriately. So basically I need to find out how to select the first non-blank in the column to the left and up based on the base entity or lowest level down the structure. Attached is the example I'm trying to figure out.

You have attached an image. That's not very easy to work with. Also... I'm lazy. I have to re-type your information before I can begin to address your problem. That puts me off completely.

    So.

Do yourself a favour and please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough). However, please give us an indication of the approximate number of rows of data you want the solution to work with (100, 1000, 100,000 or whatever).

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Make sure confidential info is removed first!!!!

If we assume your output is Col A:E (where E is "PL", i.e. your lvl0) and, as you state, values are numeric, and your "calculated" results are in Col then you can use a LOOKUP type construct to do what you want, and efficiently enough.

Thanks, long time listener, first time caller. I've attached an excel book example to the original post.

XLent - I tried using the formula's in your workbook and retrieved #N/A after implementing into my example. I don't understand the 9.99E+307 value you have in there...

    Welcome to the forum

Please attach a sample workbook (not a picture or pasted copy). Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and then scroll down to Manage Attachments to open the upload window.

=LOOKUP(9,99E+307;$A2:$E2) is a way to find the last number in a row. 9.99e+307 is the largest number XL can handle

The attached now has the desired results in columns C-F of what I'm trying to do.

This is becoming VERY confusing. You have changed the attachment from a photo to a file AFTER EXlent's answer. Your attached file sugggests that the pink shaded stuff is the OUTPUT from the INPUT in the unshaded cells. Care to explain what you want???

Lookup doesn't work because the data dump from the ERP system does not format the data to be numbers, it's text.

I apologize if this is confusing! I've been trying to dig up ways to do this and I'm dumbfounding myself.

I'm trying to take the raw data that is the output from the system - the pink shaded data - and to format it to look like what's on the left - the unshaded data, using formulas and not to be manually entered and verified. The template I'm working on consolidates the financials in our ERP system then filters it all to create the monthly and quarterly reports for upper management.

OK, but your sample is still using numbers.... ;-)

To handle text, change 9.99E+307 to REPT("Z",255)

If you have Null strings, (as opposed to blanks), in your real-life output post back - i.e. if the above change does not address your problem.

Attached would be a revised version - using the file added to post#1, but where values are stored as text.

Thank you for teaching me about lookups for text! This is perfect and I hope that the corporation will enjoy not having to manually update the hierarchy when they restructure!
