How to Limit the number of rows returned by Filter formula?

I've attached an example sheet showing what I'm trying to do.

I'm using the filter command to pick "events" out of a list that are currently ongoing. I've searched quite a bit and can't find any way to limit the number of rows the filter command gives, as I only want the first n rows.
Or is there a different formula I've missed that I can use to pick the first rows from a list that match certain criteria (i.e start date < today, end date > today)
