    Index Match to exclude numbers

    Hi,

I'm new to Index Match formula. I'm looking at a row of data which includes percentage cells and text cells. I want to return the mode for the text cells only, excluding the percentage cells.

Can anyone guide me in how to modify my formula?

    MY CURRENT FORMULA
    =INDEX(H4:U4,MODE(MATCH(H4:U4,H4:U4,0)))

    Thanks.

Re: Index Match to exclude numbers

it appears to me that should work, but I believe you need to have every cell in those ranges (H4:U4) with something in them. ALSO, that is an array formula so you need to activate it by clicking in the formula bar then hitting ctrl+shift+return so that {} will appear outside of each end of the formula. YOU CANNOT add those braces to the formula, you need to activate the formula by hitting ctrl+shift+return all at the same time.

Re: Index Match to exclude numbers

Weird, I played with it a bit longer and apparently it does not need to be entered as an array. It worked for me as a normal formula going across the row or down a column. So disregard the reference to the formula as an array in my above post.

If it doesn't work for you, you might want to follow the instructions in the yellow banner at the top of the post and upload a sample workbook WITH enough samples to show what you have AND expected results.

Re: Index Match to exclude numbers

No, since retiring I only have a version of excel for mac, it says it is version 16.48. I've been thinking about spending the money to get the latest version they make for macs, I'll have to contact Microsoft for an update.

And lately I've been sinking so much of my money into my telescopes and not spending as much time on this site so I've been weighing where to sink additional money. If you heard the saying that a boat is just a hole in the water you throw your money, well a telescope seems to be a hole in the sky you throw your money up into. I still need to purchase a laptop and program to process the photography I plan to get into. I haven't decided if I want to get a pc base or a MacBook pro as most of my electronics are apple. I know, TMI.
