    Vlookup returning incorrect results

    Hi All,

I am new to excel functions, I have two columns of data A2 and B2.
    A2 has 1000 and B2 800 entries

    I done a lookup C2:
    =VLOOKUP(B2,A:A,1,0)

When I filter on column C to value N/A, the values are not correct i.e. values are returned in column a and column b is blank. When I then do a manual check the values are present in column a and b, seems my I am missing something basic.

My understanding of the way I put the formula, check everything from B2 and see if present in A2 column. If present return value else show as n/a

    Please can you advise...

    Many Thanks

What you are missing is simply that what looks the same is not.

No hope of a more precise diagnosis without your providing a sample sheet showing the issue, although sometimes it's when you try to compare a number to text, and of course they don't match, or there are leading or trailing spaces causing a mismatch.

There are instructions at the top of the page explaining how to attach your sample workbook.

    Re: Vlookup returning incorrect results

What are you expecting it to return in rows 17 and below? There is nothing in B17, so nothing to find.

VLOOKUP is not working incorrectly - you have incorrect expectations.

VLOOKUP is looking for a blank (B17 onwards) !

    You can trap the errors....

    =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(B17,A:A,1,0),"")
