    Left, right to split name

    smith, john I need a formula in getting the first 3 letter (char) of both last and first name as smijoh

    =LEFT(A2,3)&TRIM(MID(A2,FIND(",",A2)+1,4))

    based on your example but is this typical?

    probably being dim, its Friday afternoon but why is the trim needed?
    =LEFT(A2,3)&MID(A2,FIND(",",A2)+1,3)

    Another way that you can consider...

    =LEFT(REPLACE(A1,4,FIND(" ",A1)-3,""),6)

    FYI =LEFT(A3,3)&TRIM(MID(A3,FIND(",",A3)+1,4))

    See posts #3 and #4: TRIM is redundant in the formula I offered.
