Sum cells based on contents of cell directly above

Is it possible to sum cells that have specific criteria met in the cell above them?
In the attached document, is there a formula or macro that will go through the whole array (A1:I12) and sum the cells just below all cells that =Material (it can only be material, not material/ft or anything like that)
I think the basic SUMIF would work if the values were in the adjacent column, not row. Do I need to pivot this array first?
