    Problem with time calculations

    Hello helpful folks,

I've got an issue with a time card spreadsheet using tables.

I've got a column for date, start time, end time and the number hours:minutes worked (simple subtract start time from end time). Each row is an individual task so there can be several rows for the same day.

I'm able to create another summary table that sums the hours:minutes worked for each day. This uses a SUMIF formula so no matter how many rows there are for a particular date, the hours:minutes worked for that day get summed and display correctly.

All is fine until I sum the hours:minutes in the summary table to get the weekly total. Seems to work fine if the sum of the hours:minutes in the summary table is <= 24, but the total is wrong if > 24. I've tried various methods to get the sum to be correct including different formulas and time formats to no avail.

See attached file. TimeCard.xlsx Any ideas?

Sometimes it would be valuable to state what time formats you have tried, so we don't repeat some of what you have tried. I notice that your current number format on H10 is a basic time of day format "h:mm;@" 3:10 is correct for the time of day for that serial number. I edited the format to be an elapsed time format "[h]:mm;@" and it immediately displayed 27:10.

If you were previously unaware of the difference between time of day and elapsed time formats, now you know the difference, and may want to spend some time with the "time" category in the number format dialog to see what the different formats do.

    Re: Problem with time calculations

WOW! Thank you very much for the quick supply and easy solution. I'm pretty familiar with Excel formulas and formats, but I didn't know about "elapsed" time formats. So something I will certainly read up on. Thanks again!!!
