    Dependent Dropdown List

I have followed the steps to create a dependent drop-down list. However, when i wanted to create a second dropdown list based on the main dropdown list, the returns are blank. I realized that it could be due to my main dropdown list text (C1, C2, C3) as when i relabeled the text to Control1, Control2, Control3 etc, the secondary dropdown list mysteriously appeared.

I have been using data -> data validation -> source : =INDIRECT(D3) whereby D3 is the location of the main dropdown list. Is there anyway to bypass this as I would like to label my list as C1, C2, C3? Thank you!

    Re: Dependent Dropdown List

    Welcome to the forum.

Which version of Excel are you using?

There are instructions at the top of the page explaining how to attach your sample workbook (yellow banner: HOW TO ATTACH YOUR SAMPLE WORKBOOK). Screenshots are of little practical use as we cannot manipulate them.

A good sample workbook has just 10-20 rows of representative data that has been desensitised. It also has expected results mocked up, worked examples where required, relevant cells highlighted and a few explanatory notes.

According to your name range setting, try this

    =INDIRECT("_"&D3)

Thank you so much, windknife. Appreciate your help immensely!

I have another question. Is it possible to create an interdependency between 2 columns? For example, if I type in Potato in Cell E3, Cell D3 will automatically reflect as category C2?
