It is better to ask about how to get the result you need, rather than asking about a technique in the abstract. Trevor showed one example of MATCH nested in INDEX. Here is another using MATCH twice:
Values as displayed
A B C D E F G H 1 7 2 b 3 x 4 a b c d e 5 w 1 2 3 4 5 6 x 6 7 8 9 10 7 y 11 12 13 14 15 8 z 16 17 18 19 20Sheet5
Underlying formulas
A B C D E F G H 1 =INDEX($D$5:$H$8,MATCH($A$2,$D$4:$H$4,0),MATCH($A$3,$C$5:$C$8,0)) 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
