    exchanging No`s for names

I have a list of data in one spreadsheet which includes names. In another spreadsheet I have a league with players having No's.
I want to exchange the player No's to names ie. the first name in the first spreadsheet to replace player 1, the second name in the list to replace player 2 and so on. The list of names are in column A in the first spreadsheet but in the second spreadsheet, player No's I,2 and soon are in several different columns and rows. Please help with the solution.

    Re: exchanging No`s for names

What do you mean by 'advert'?

You cannot REPLACE existing values with a formula. Shall I move this to the VBA section for you?

    Administrative Note:

Is your forum profile showing the Excel PRODUCT that you need this to work for?

Members will tailor the solutions they offer to the Office PRODUCT (Excel, NOT Windows) that you have. Please check that your forum profile is up-to-date in this respect. If you aren't sure, in Excel go to File | Account and report what it says below the MS logo at the top of that page. If your product is for Mac, please also state this.

The three most recent Excel products are Excel 2019, Excel 2021 and MS365 - if you are using MS365, please give this name along with the version number in your profile (e.g. MS365 Version 2306). This is in the About Excel section further down the Account page.

    Thanks.

What popup are you talking about?

DJ has provided you with a formula solution based on what he thinks you need (he's read the problem differently to me). He has added just formulae to your workbook. There is nothing more than that!

    Re: exchanging No`s for names

Please excuse the mistake of using the word "advert". The response received to the post was exactly what I was wanting however the way it way it was shown in the file was similar to a pop up advert asking me to pay into the answer. I think confusion is the main problem.

    Re: exchanging No`s for names

Please share a screenshot of this popup. I saw no popup when I opened the workbook. No, you do not have to pay for anything here - it's a free forum.

Are you REALLY using Excel 2007??? If not, please update your forum profile NOW.

    No response ...

When you tried to open the workbook, had you logged out of the forum? If so, you might have been asked to log in. I believe only members can open workbooks, not guests. However, there is no payment involved.

If you are NOT using Excel 2007 (which is very old), then you need to update your forum profile with your current version of Excel, please.

    Re: exchanging No`s for names

my apologies for this back and forth. It seems that when i open the reply on my tablet, a pop up appears. I have now fired up my 10 year old laptop, got it to working temperature and looked at the reply again and the pop up does not show. All now seems as normal. Yes, my version of Excel is of 2007 vintage.
Now that i can view the reply, where does the formula go ?

    Re: exchanging No`s for names

OK - then the popup may be related to whether or not you are subscribed to Office on the tablet. That has absolutely nothing to do with this forum

If that takes care of your original question, please choose Thread Tools from the menu link above and mark this thread as SOLVED. You can also access the SOLVED tag by editing the opening post and choosing SOLVED from the drop-down to the left of the title box.

Also, if you have not already done so, remember that you can reward anyone who offered you help towards a solution for your issue by clicking the small star icon (* Add Reputation) located in the lower left corner of the post in which the help was given. By doing so you can add to the reputation(s) of each of those who offered help.

We STILL need to get to the bottom of your profile issue so that you can use the other (original) account (JOSAND) and this one can be closed. The old account tells us that you are already using 365!

Please send me a private message with details of your logging in issues so that I can contact the tech team.

I saw something in DJ's post before the formula box. I refreshed the screen and it vanished. I cannot reproduce it.

It looked like a big rectangle with a small cross in the top left corner ( I think ).

Open the workbook he attached and replicate the solution he offered in your own workbook. If it works, say 'thanks' and mark the thread as solved. If not, then explain in more detail what you want.

I haven't seen anything of the sort. What do you mean by "before the formula box"?

Scrolling: there's a scrollbar on the extreme right of this forum page. If you use it, you can scroll back up the page.

Or, clicking: clicking on the link I posted in post #22 will take you straight back to post #2 without needing to scroll.

Are you not sure how to click on a link? If so, then just hover your cursor over the blue text and a finger/hand icon will appear. When it does, just click and you will be whisked back up to post #2.

    Ah, I see!

You would need to copy the formulae to the area in the workbook where you want the names to appear and adapt as necessery. I have done this for you in the attached (copying from the area below where DJ set up the proposed solution).

without wanting to annoy you or being disrespectful, you seem to think that i know how to go about this.
Once again, you are not annoying ANYBODY. However, we try not to make people feel awkward by assuming they know nothing: we always come at it with an assumption of a basic knowledge about formula manipulation. If you don't understand, then we are more than happy to explain in more detail. However, we have to be very careful not to insult our members' intelligence.

    Re: exchanging No`s for names

    Step by step:

    1. Delete the values from the brown section in your workbook (A1 to A11), then paste this into A1: =Sheet1!A3:A10
    2. Select cells C13 to I23 and copy (CTRL+C).
    3. Select cell C1 and paste (CTRL+V).

    Hope this helps.

Just a thought; as you have 2007, you may need to use this in A1 and copy it down:

    =IF(Sheet1!A3="","",Sheet1!A3)
