This looks more complicated:
=IF(E1="","",COUNT(1/FREQUENCY(MATCH($E$1:$E1,$E$1:$E1,0),ROW($E$1:$E1)-ROW($E$1))))
in E1, copied down.
But... it is 3x faster than the one above. About 0.35 seconds to calculate 500 rows, as opposed to about 1.1 seconds for 500 rows.
