Count cells with this answer and total

This has to be a COUNT function but I can't get it right.

I am trying to get a large spreadsheet to tally certain answers across the page. It is bowl games in which each person selected one team or the other my entering the appropriate abbreviation. On the far right I want it to simply count each cell with a correct answer in it. There were 20 games so if the correct answer is in 15 cells then it should total 15. I was able to do it by eliminating the wrong answers and just counting the cells left with info. I would rather do it without having to do this and I know it can be done simply, but not by me! Try the COUNTIF function.

=COUNTIF(the range to search,what to count)

I have tried using COUNTIF. I count the range from left to right BUT when I input what to count it only counts the last one I enter. There are 20 answers that are either "this" or "that" but the problem seems to be that for each square it is not looking for just one same right or wrong answer. Each cell has a right or wrong answer AND the next cell had a completely different right or wrong answer. I tried COUNTIF (range left to right,correct answer, correct answer, etc.) but it only counts one.
