I'm probably being really dumb, but

.. what I want to do is look at a cell and see if the value in that cell appears in a range of other cells. Then if it does, I want to show the word that appears to the right of the cell with the matching value.

So, for example, if I have a cell that could have 1, 2 or 3 in it. Then a range of cells that go:

    Original cell = 2

    1 Apple
    2 Orange
    3 Banana

I want to ask, if the original cell contains the number 2, then show the word 'Orange'.

This seems like a simple thing, but I can't find any reference to it in Help.

Thanks so much in advance for anyone who can help me - I'm in trouble if I can't do it!

A vlookup formula can sort this out

Have your list as shown, then in A1, enter 1, then in B1

    =VLOOKUP(A1,G1:H3,2)

your range in this example is in G1:H3
