Total Lowest Scores

I am creating a spreadsheet for an upcoming horse event and need to be able to total the three lowest scores for the team. Team names (listed for each member) are in column Q and the individual scores are listed in column P.

For example:

Rider Total Score Team
Pam 43 purple
Jana 50 Red
Mary 22 yellow
Fred 32 purple
John 40 red
Jean 18 yellow
Gene 30 purple
Marc 12 red
Gabi 60 yellow
Sabrina 41 purple
Anna 29 red
Chris 50 yellow

What is the best means of getting the total of the three smallest scores for the team?

Try:

=SUM(SMALL(IF($Q$2:$Q$13=H2,$P$2:$P$13),{1,2,3}))

where H2 houses name of team to sum.

Adjust ranges to suit.

Formula must be confirmed with CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER not just ENTER to work.

I pasted your formula into my spreadsheet, adjusted the ranges and H2 to D$17 and after doing CTRL, SHIFT, ENTER the cell displays "Num!"

I cannot tell what is wrong.
