Counting items in nested manufacturing build

Items are combined into other components, which get combined with other items & components.

I need to count how many items are used to make complete product. I'm using a pivot table on a seperate page to total all repeated items. But vlookup is not computing for multiple levels. IE. ITEM is built from 3 WIDGETS, those WIDGETS are made up of 1 THING & 2 KABOBS. The THING is made of 2 SOMETHINGS held together with 3 BOLTS. I need a total of 9 BOLTS for the ITEM.

I'm using Data-Group to make it more visual, and have tried to replicate that with Word-Drawing. See attached .doc .

I'm using vlookup() but it isn't working in the deeper nests & somethimes grabs a near-by Qty of the same part number.
