    sorting and look up question

I have a spreadsheet that has 43,000 rows and 22 columns of data. The top row is a header row. For each row I need to have excel look across the 22 columns, find the largest number, and then tell me what the column header is for the column that has that largest number.

Any ideas on what functions to use and how to write the formula?

    Spreadsheet usage would be =watkec(A2:V43001)

    Hi watkec,

Here's a standard worksheet function that should do the trick as well:

A:V is 22 columns, so adjust your formulas as needed for your columns.

    Nice function, shg!

Thank you, but I misread the question; I understood the OP to want the value of the row header for the max in the entire table.

Yours has the merit of doing what was requested ...
