Counting items in a unique list

I have a huge sales spreadsheet, that I have used the Advanced filter to show me all of the unique part numbers that were sold. How do I count just those items to show how many unique items were sold.

    Peace

    Hi,

    Have you tried SUBTOTAL ?

    =SUBTOTAL(2,A1:A20)

Use this array formula (must be confirmed with Ctrl+Shift+Enter instead of Enter): =SUM(1 / COUNTIF(A1:A100, A1:A100) )

    great formula!

SHG, That is really a great formula. I fooled around with a bunch o' "auto filter - unique - copy elsewhere" attempts on a worksheet I was using and got nowhere until I adapted your formula. I was trying to find individual names in a list 319 lines long (health insurance subscribers) which included all participants including spouse's and kids. Until I used your formula I got nowhere. I really apprecite your post, but doesn't it seem rediculous that Excel is so freakin' hard to use??? What is Microsoft's problem?? Sorry to rant a bit but every time I try to do anything other than the most simple tasks with Excel I hit a roadblock. At any rate, I truly appreciate your post. Thanks so much!

Sorry, misread your question, but here's an alternative

    =SUMPRODUCT((1/COUNTIF(A1:A100,A1:A100)))
