    Formula for Feet & Inches

I work for a steel manufacture. My boss would like to make a inventory list of steel that we have in stock. When portion of steel is used, he would like to know how much is left.

    EXAMPLE: 5' - 10" Stock
    4' - 11" used
    11" left in Stock.

Is there a way to put this information in Excel and have it figure it for us, using the example up above.

I do understand that Stock and Used has it's own cell. Left in Stock is a sum.

Any suggestions on how to do this without converting everything to inches.

    Thanks Rich

Not sure if this is that you're looking for...
    and it sure isn't pretty...but

    If
    A1: 5' - 10" Stock
    A2: 4' - 11" used

And you want to subtract pull the lengths from
cells A2 from A1 and subtract them....maybe this?:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
    If A2: 4' - 11" used
A3 returns: 11'' left in stock

    If A2: 4' - 9" used
    A3 returns: 1' - 1'' left in stock

    If A2: 4' - 10" used
    A3 returns: 1' - 0'' left in stock

Depending on who will be looking at your workbook, you might consider using the DOLLARFR/DOLLARDE fns.For instance, you would enter 5.03 in a cell instead of 5' - 3", or 17.11 instead of 17' - 11". So, what looks like a decimal is actually a twelfth.
